2008 COMMUNITY RELATIONS PROGRAMS

When Texans owner Bob McNair formed the league’s 32nd franchise, he envisioned that the Texans’ success would reside in its character, attitude and enthusiasm both on and off of the field. With that in mind, he formulated this mission statement for the organization:

To be recognized as the most community-connected professional sports franchise in the worlds by deploying strategic, sustainable and equity-building initiatives that fully leverage the assets of our organization and deliver measurable community impact.

The Texans take tremendous pride in the greater Houston community. Whether showing support through community, civic or charitable efforts, the organization is committed to aiding the community that has been there to cheer on the Texans’ efforts from the outset. Here is a glance at some of the club’s continuing community endeavors.

Take a Texan to School Day
This annual event presented by the Houston Chronicle and 3-A-Day Dairy, awards ten lucky students ages 5-12 a visit from a Texans player at their school. Players visit schools across the region, providing students with an unforgettable and enjoyable experience.

HISD Cultural Arts Poster Contest
In an effort to encourage creative minds and cultural awareness through art, the Texans launched a cultural arts poster contest for middle school students in the Houston Independent School District. The students are required to create posters that incorporate various influences from the Asian/Pacific, Black, Hispanic and American Cultures. Contest winners receive Houston Texans memorabilia and have their artwork professionally framed.

2008 Houston Texans Blood Drive
Since its inception in 2002, roughly 10,000 blood donations have been received. Our most recent effort enabled over 2,300 individuals to donate blood. The impressive turn out is highlighted when mentioning that one donation can save up to three lives.

Junior Player Development
Our commitment to youth football is paying huge dividends for youth touched by this program. Over 1,000 middle school students from the Greater Houston area participate in the Junior Player Development Program. The program is designed to teach every football position through a step-by-step progression of skill process. During last year’s National Signing Day for college football, fourteen local high school football players who participated in the Texans and NFL’s jointly sponsored Junior Player Development program signed letters of intent to play football at major universities. Many of our past participants have gone on to attend college on athletic scholarships.

Girls...Get in the Game
Girls...Get in the Game is a one-day sports camp for middle school-aged girls. The number of girls who participated this year doubled from last year’s inaugural event.  The camp hosted by the Lady Texans organization featured youth football drills and a cheerleading clinic.

What Moves U
What Moves U is a program launched by the NFL and American Heart Association to tackle the increase in childhood obesity. The curriculum includes strategies to help teachers incorporate fitness into their daily lesson plans to combat youth inactivity. Thousands of middle school students in the Houston area and cities all over the country have benefited from this program.

Hometown Huddle
Players from 32 NFL teams participate in a community service activity that benefits a United Way Agency. The Texans have joined forces with the United Way of Greater Houston on many local initiatives since 2002. Hometown Huddle has become a signature event for both organizations, providing a unique opportunity for area youth to interact with their hometown heroes and learn firsthand that success in athletics – or in any field – requires great determination and discipline.

Shop With A Texan
A shopping spree is coordinated during the Christmas holidays for disadvantaged children. Houston Texans players push shopping carts and assist the children with their shopping for their holiday purchases. Academy Sports and Outdoors provides $100 gift certificates to 25 youth from local shelters. The unforgettable experience ensures each child has a unique holiday season.

BMC Software Texans Homefield Advantage
This year, the Texans teamed up with BMC Software, King Ranch Turfgrass and the Sequor Foundation and donated a football field to ProVision Charter School in Houston, as a part of the team’s Play60 efforts. ProVision is an all-boys middle school that focuses on character education for its students through the school’s manhood development program.

NFL Play 60
The Texans are committed to reversing the effects of the childhood obesity epidemic. NFL PLAY 60 is a national youth health and fitness campaign focused on increasing the wellness of young fans by encouraging them to be active for at least 60 minutes a day.
