The goal of the program is to provide non-profit, neighborhood-based organizations with financial and technical assistance to improve the quality, safety, and accessibility of local football fields. The program provides grants of up to $100,000 for capital improvement projects. The Grassroots program is intended not only to respond to the immediate shortage of playing fields, but to also build an infrastructure throughpartnerships and resident involvement that will sustain these open spaces for community use.NFL Play It Smart Program In 1998, NFL Play it Smart began with the idea that team sports have the power to strengthen kids and put them on the right track for life. Play it Smart takes a player’s dedication and passion for his game and team and transforms it into a catalyst for scholastic, community and career development. Play it Smart gives kids an opportunity to be part of a team, to develop their bodies and minds and to lift their aspirations for the future. The positive impact of the program has been remarkable with grades, SAT scores, and graduation rates rising across the board. Play it Smart trains academic” coaches and places them in schools to work with high school athletic teams for the whole year, taking the lessons learned on the field and applying them in the classroom and the community. By capitalizing on the positive peer pressure of the group, Play it Smart academic coaches work closely with their head coaches to change the norms of the team, creating a healthy gang environment where academic achievement and community involvement become the standard. |
