In-season diet

Nutrition, health and performance are important to the Houston Texans. We feed our players breakfast and lunch. We have two cafeteria type lines with a variety of food choices. We have a heart healthy line which follows the guidelines of the American Heart Association and approximately 70-80% of our players choose foods from this line. The other line has higher fat items which some of our players need to be able to maintain their weight during the season. A typical diet for a Houston Texans football player consists of the following items which are found on our heart healthy line.

Breakfast

Egg white omelet with turkey, ham and vegetables
Oatmeal with cinnamon
Homemade waffles with pecans and syrup
12 oz. of orange juice
8 oz of milk
Large bowl of fresh fruit

Lunch

Tomato or vegetable soup
Blackened chicken breasts
Wild rice pilaf
Grilled asparagus
Seasoned mustard greens
Green salad with low fat dressing
Water

Dinner (on their own)

Players may eat out at Houston area restaurants, go home and cook or if they are married have their wives cook for them) Houston is an international city with wonderful foods from all cultures and our players enjoy eating out at a variety of restaurants. Seafood and Italian cuisine are particularly popular.

A typical home cooked dinner may consist of the following:

Grilled steak
Baked potatoes with butter and sour cream
Cooked vegetable
Salad or bread.
