The Texans finished 2008 by tying a franchise-best 8-8 record and going 5-1 over the final six weeks of the season.

With high hopes for 2009, the Texans are taking a break before training begins for next season. In the meantime, HoustonTexans.com will break down the performance of each position group during the 2008 season and take a look at what's to come in 2009.

Houston Texans Position Groups


Special Teams - Jan. 27
The Texans had an exciting year in the kicking game thanks in part to two punt returns for touchdown by Jacoby Jones and the stellar kicking of Kris Brown.

Offensive line - Jan. 23
The Texans' offensive line made huge strides under assistant head coach Alex Gibbs. They excelled in Gibb's zone blocking scheme and helped take the run game to the next level.

Wide receivers - Jan. 22
The Texans’ passing game proved to be one of the most potent in the league, as the team finished the season ranked fourth in the NFL with 266.7 passing yards per game. Leading the way was Andre Johnson, who topped the NFL in receptions (115) and receiving yards (1,575).

Tight ends - Jan. 21
Tight end Owen Daniels took his game to a new level in 2008, finishing the season with 70 receptions for 862 yards and averaging 12.3 yards per catch. The third-year pro ranked third among NFL tight ends in receiving yards and fifth in receptions.

Defensive line - Jan. 11
A year after his team-record 14-sack season, defensive end Mario Williams anchored the Texans’ defensive line with 12 sacks and was named to his first Pro Bowl in 2008. Outside of Williams, who accounted for 48 percent of the team’s sacks, the Texans struggled to find a consistent pass rush from their front four.

Quarterbacks - Jan. 9
Quarterbacks Matt Schaub and Sage Rosenfels combined to set a franchise single-season record in 2008 with 4,267 net passing yards, giving the team the fourth-ranked passing offense in the NFL.

Linebackers - Jan. 8
Anchored by middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans, the Texans’ linebacking corps got more formidable in 2008 with a boost from two young players and a versatile veteran newcomer.

Running backs/fullbacks - Jan. 7
Thanks to a new zone blocking scheme implemented by assistant head coach Alex Gibbs and a rookie sensation in running back Steve Slaton, the Texans enjoyed the best rushing season in team history in 2008.

Secondary - Jan. 6
With a mix of young and veteran players, the Texans’ secondary overcame a season-ending injury to safety C.C. Brown and a season-beginning injury to cornerback Dunta Robinson to help shore up the team’s passing defense in 2008.
