Practice quotes: Friday
Texans head coach Gary Kubiak
spoke to the media after practice Friday before the team's early departure for Oakland, announcing that wide receiver Andre Johnson will not play on Sunday.
Head coach Gary Kubiak
(on any updates from today) "The biggest thing is we made a decision on Andre (Johnson). He will not play until we come back against New Orleans. He's made a lot of progress this week. He's practiced pretty darn good. He's not 100 percent, but he's close and the best thing for Andre and for our football is to make that he gets another 16 or 17 days of rest. We will proceed that way. He'll be back against New Orleans and we're excited about that."
(on the running back situation) "I may suit all three of them. Ahman (Green) has had a good week of practice. He's ready to go. Adimchinobi (Echemandu) looks fine, has looked fine. We may end up suiting all three of them just to be smart. We'll see."
(on if it will be the same configuration with the receivers) "Yes, same thing with those. That's the way we've been practicing. That's the way we practiced today. Like I said, we really liked his progress and we liked what we saw and we've been talking to him, but the smartest thing for Andre (Johnson)'s career and for the Texans as we move forward is to make sure he's 100 percent. He is not 100 percent yet, but he's awful close and there's no doubt he will be there in two weeks."
(on the league's fine on Chargers DB Drayton Florence) "We made a statement. The only thing I'd add to it is the same thing (general manager) Rick (Smith) said that I'm disappointed. We have a game to play. It's time to move on."
(on if CB Dexter Wynn will be up) "Yes, no doubt. Dexter Wynn is up."
(on if the team is excited to leave early) "I don't know. It's interesting. As I told you all, these guys, all they do is work together. This is a chance for them to go out there, the groups are going out to dinner with their coaches, some of their coaches, and stuff like that. The coaches they like. It's a chance for them, it's a little bit different atmosphere. You get to actually relax today, but it's all business. We have a game to play, they know that."
(on the health of the offensive line) "Chester (Pitts) missed practice today. He's sick, but I think he should be fine. The only other thing, the young tackle (Rashad Butler) will be the swing tackle this week."
