Kubiak reviews loss to Titans
Head coach Gary Kubiak
reviewed the Texans' 20-17 loss to the Tennessee Titans during his weekly press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Running back rotation: Running backs Chris Brown
and Steve Slaton
combined for 16 carries and 57 yards against the Titans. Brown ran 11 times for 36 yards, and Kubiak explained why Brown saw an increased workload on Monday night.
"The times that we gave Chris opportunities in our offense, we were very impressed with what he had done," Kubiak said. "We played very clean football when he was in there, which we did (again) last night. He was excellent in protections. He picked up about two or three safety blitzes that gave us chances to make plays."
Kubiak also was pleased with what Slaton did against Tennessee.
"Steve did some good things," he said. "He had one play there at the end that I know he'd love to have back, the catch. I wasn't disappointed in either one of (the running backs)."
Kicker situation: For the second consecutive week at the end of regulation, kicker Kris Brown
was wide left on what would've been a game-tying field goal. He missed a 49-yarder with one second left against the Titans on Monday night, but Kubiak said Brown is still the man for the job.
"Kris is our kicker," Kubiak said. "You all know I have a lot of confidence in him. Obviously I'm disappointed and Kris is disappointed. We're disappointed as a football team but we just got to keep working. Nobody knows this business better than Kris. He'll work extra hard at it and we just got to do everything we can to get it corrected because we expect him to make those. But more importantly, he expects to make them."
"We need to go play again. If that was tomorrow it would be fine with me."
Quick turnaround: Because they played a day later than normal, the Texans' week of preparation for the Colts is shorter. The players were off on Tuesday and get right back to work on Wednesday. Kubiak is happy that's the case.
"We need to go play again," Kubiak said. "If that was tomorrow, it would be fine with me."
Indianapolis sports a 10-0 record after a road victory at Baltimore on Sunday. The Texans have beaten the Colts just once since beginning play in 2002.
"We're very familiar with them," Kubiak said. "They're familiar with us. I know we're ready to play again, so it won't be too soon."
Starter out: Free safety Eugene Wilson
left the game last night with an injured big toe. When he was asked about Wilson on Tuesday, Kubiak said that Wilson will "be out for a while," and that in addition to his big toe, another toe was hurt as well.
"He definitely will not play this week," Kubiak said. "We'll make a decision on him in a couple days."
Kubiak also said wide receiver Jacoby Jones
will have to prove in practice this week that he'll be ready for the Colts game. Jones was inactive against the Titans because of a calf injury. Also dinged up against Tennesee were linebacker DeMeco Ryans
with an ankle injury and tight end Joel Dreessen
with a shoulder injury. Both will be day-to-day this week, but Kubiak expects them to be ready to play on Sunday.
