Report: Walter, Texans agree to terms
According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans have agreed to terms on a new multi-year contract with unrestricted free agent wide receiver Kevin Walter
.
There is no announcement from the Texans. Per team policy, all transactions are not official until they are announced by the team.
Walter (6-3, 218) has been one of the most talked-about names in free agency, which began at 11:01 p.m. CT on Thursday. Teams reportedly interested in the 28-year-old's services include the Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns, Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears and the Cincinnati Bengals, Walter's former team.
The Ravens were widely reported to be frontrunners to sign Walter, but they traded for Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin on Friday afternoon.
Texans general manager Rick Smith said at the NFL scouting combine that the team would like to re-sign Walter, who originally signed with Houston from Cincinnati in 2006.
"Kevin's a big part of our team and has been a big-time contributor to our football team," Smith said on Feb. 26. "We would like to have Kevin back. We have articulated that to him. I met just as recently as last night with his agent, just kind of talking about what they expect and kind of where we are to see if there's a way to retain him, because he's an important part of our football team and we would like to (re-sign him)."
Walter averaged 59 catches and 770 yards over the last three seasons as the Texans' No. 2 wide receiver opposite Andre Johnson.
