Texans acquire C Chris Myers

Chris Myers knows the offensive system assistant head coach Alex Gibbs is installing in Houston from his days in Denver.

The Texans have acquired center Chris Myers in a trade with the Denver Broncos, the team announced Monday. Houston traded its sixth-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft to Denver in exchange for Myers.

Myers (6-4, 300) has seen action in 41 career games with 16 starts with the Denver Broncos. He was drafted in the sixth round (200th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. The versatile fourth-year lineman has experience playing under Texans head coach Gary Kubiak, who was Denver's offensive coordinator during Myers' rookie season.

"I love Denver, love the organization, love the team and the whole city and I had a great time there for three seasons and kind of made my way up the ladder and finally got a starting position last year," Myers said. "But when I went (to Houston) for a visit last year, it was unbelievable, the sense of excitement that's around the whole organization for building the young team and what's going on. Even when Denver played them last year, it was unbelievable the feeling you got when you go on the field before the game with all that's going on around the organization. I'm very excited and very anxious to be a part of that in the next coming years."


Under assistant head coach/offense Alex Gibbs, Myers will run the same zone blocking scheme he learned in Denver.

"He's a hardnosed offensive line coach that pretty much started the scheme," Myers said of Gibbs. "He's got a love for the game that's unmatched. It's kind of a privilege to be able to play for him, and I'm real excited about that. He knows what he's doing and there's no one else better."

The former University of Miami standout started all 16 games for the Broncos last season. He started the first five contests at left guard before sliding inside to center for the last 11 games. Myers was part of a Denver offense that averaged 346.3 yards per game, ranking 11th in the NFL. The Broncos' 4.6 yards-per-carry average was fifth-best in the league last year.
