Media reports Rosenfels trade; no official announcement

In the past two seasons, quarterback Sage Rosenfels has a 6-4 record as a starter.
The Houston Chronicle's John McClain and SportsRadio 610 reported Monday afternoon that the Texans are planning to trade quarterback Sage Rosenfels to the Minnesota Vikings for a pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

There is no official announcement from the Texans. General manager Rick Smith is attending the 2009 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

There were reports last offseason that the Vikings were interested in acquiring Rosenfels, an eight-year veteran, but nothing transpired between the teams.

Instead, Rosenfels completed his third season with the Texans, playing in six games with five starts and going 2-3 as a starter. In all, he completed 66.7 percent of his passes for 1,431 yards with six touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His passer rating was 79.5.

After the season, Rosenfels summed up his performance.

"I'd like to play better," he said. "I felt like 95 percent of the time, I played really good football, and then five percent of the time, I played poor football. So it's a learning experience for me. I've been playing a lot the last couple of years, and that's been a lot of fun. It's been exciting. But it gives me a lot of motivation for next season."

While Rosenfels has acknowledged his desire to be a starter, he likes his situation in Houston.

"I think every competitor's goal is to be a starter, but I do love it here," he said in December. "In my eight years, this is the best group of guys I've ever been around, whether in Washington my rookie year, four years with the Dolphins and now three years here. We have so many great guys in this locker room and they're so fun to play with, and I think everyone is seeing the possibilities, especially on offense, that we can have.

"It's very exciting for a quarterback to be in a system that everyone now is going into their third and fourth season and that I feel I can run as good as anybody."

In 2007, Rosenfels filled in for starter Matt Schaub and finished with a 4-1 record as a starter. He totaled 1,684 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 84.8.

Rosenfels has been at his best in the most high-profile games. He led the Texans to wins in two nationally televised games in the past two seasons. He completed 14-of-24 passes for 200 yards and a touchdown in the team's 30-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday Night Football in 2008.

On Thursday night football on the NFL Network in 2007, Rosenfels finished with two touchdowns and 200 passing yards in the Texans' 31-13 win over the Denver Broncos at Reliant Stadium.

In his final press conference of the 2008 season, coach Gary Kubiak praised Rosenfels for his contributions to the team.

"There's a place on this football team for Sage," Kubiak said. "And he can do a great job for us. I expect him to come back and do that."

Rosenfels grew up hours away from the Twin Cities in Maquoketa, Iowa, and attended Iowa State University. He was a fourth round choice of the Washington Redskins in the 2001 NFL Draft.
