After ankle surgery, Duane Brown will be ready for camp

Posted Jun 20, 2013

Left tackle Duane Brown said Thursday that surgery for bone spurs on his right ankle won't affect his readiness for 2013.

The stitches were removed two days ago, and left tackle Duane Brown has been running and getting prepared for the start of Texans training camp in late July. According to the 2012 All-Pro lineman, who underwent ankle surgery June 5, he’ll be ready when practices start at the Methodist Training Center.

“I’m fine,” Brown said Thursday. “I’m full go, first day.”

Brown and nose tackle David Hunter joined Hall of Fame left tackle Anthony Muñoz at Finnigan Park near downtown Houston on Thursday afternoon. The trio helped lead more than 250 children in an NFL Play 60 Character Camp, extolling the virtues of physical activity and making smart life decisions. It was also the first time Brown met with the media since head coach Gary Kubiak explained Brown’s absence from OTA’s. The left tackle moved around just fine and emphasized that the bone spurs aren’t a problem

“I’m good,” Brown said. “I got my stitches out and I’m back running. I’ll be close to 100% in the next week or two.”

Brown went through part of OTA’s with his teammates, but the problems in his ankle were a nuisance and he underwent surgery just over two weeks ago.

“I thought it was something I could ignore for awhile,” Brown said. “Then it started to be an issue that I knew would affect my play. So, better to get it done early, have the recovery process and be 100 percent by the season and play at a level I’m capable of.”

Brown explained that a bone spur on his right ankle bothered him every time he bent down, and said the spur was shaved down and “some cartilage” was cleaned out as well. He also said that nothing was done to his ligaments, and the biggest challenge for him now is to get his “wind back” and work on his conditioning.
