Akeem Dent: "Student of the Game"

Posted Jul 27, 2014

Linebacker Akeem Dent is soaking up the playbook as quickly as possible after coming to Houston in a trade from Atlanta.

Akeem Dent is going to class.

Sort of.

The Texans traded quarterback T.J. Yates to Atlanta for Dent at the end of minicamp, and the former Falcon is now soaking up Houston's playbook as quickly as he can.

"I'm just anxious to learn," Dent said Sunday morning. "I'm behind. But I have to just come in each day and take what I learn the previous day and just take it home and study."

Dent made the NFL All-Rookie team in 2011 for his special teams heroics, as he made 19 tackles there his first season. The former Georgia Bulldog started 13 games in his second season, and seven last year. He's not shy when it comes to hitting.

"I'm a physical guy, a run-stopper," Dent said. "I'm a guy that's going to be smart and give everything that I have."

For now, however, it's all about being a "student of the game" and learning from a former linebacking great in his position coach Mike Vrabel.

"Coach Vrabel's done a great job of teaching," Dent said. "He still has that fire. He's one of those guys that comes out here with a lot of energy and a lot of passion. That's one of the things you have to have as a linebacker."

Dent and the Texans will don helmets and pads Monday morning for the first time in camp, and they'll commence hitting as well.
