The Classic benefited the Houston Area Women’s Center, an organization dedicated to helping mothers and other individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence move forward. On Tuesday, the All-Pro hand delivered a $30,000 check to Women’s Center President and CEO Rebecca White.
“Our whole thing was to help these women and their kids, help them with their careers and goals and self-sufficiency programs,” Johnson said of the golf tournament. “A lot of my teammates came out and participated. We had a great turnout and were able to give back.”
For 37 years the Women’s Center has been providing shelter, counseling and advocacy to support women, children and men in building lives free from the effects of violence. Johnson’s contribution will assist in providing a place of refuge and relief to the 120 people living in residential shelters.
President and CEO Rebecca White graciously thanked the All-Pro for his contribution, and in-turn presented him with a colorful banner painted by the children of the Women’s Center.
“Over our 37 years we’ve seen some incredible acts of generosity, and none any more wonderful than Andre Johnson stepping up and having a golf tournament to benefit the mothers in our shelter,” White said. “When fine citizens of our community like Andre Johnson step up and lend their support, it really does send the message that (the women) are not alone.”
Johnson will tour the shelter in the coming days and interact with the women who will receive aid from the fundraiser’s proceeds.
“My foundation is always working with kids that grew up in a single parent home and things like that,” Johnson said. “Giving back to the women that have been battered and stuff like that and have been through some tough things in their life, just to help them get back on their feet. We just try to help out as much as we can.”
