At Rockets game, Bill O'Brien talks Draft and more

Posted Jan 9, 2014

New head coach Bill O'Brien went to a Rockets-Lakers game on Wednesday night, and spoke about "boyhood idol" Kevin McHale, as well as Johnny Manziel.

Bill O’Brien continues to get acquainted with Houston. Along with general manager Rick Smith, the new head coach of the Texans took in the Rockets-Lakers game on Wednesday night at Toyota Center. He also took some time to talk football with Leila Rahimi of CSN Houston.

O’Brien was asked about Draft plans, and more specifically, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel. The Texas A&M Aggie announced yesterday that he’s now preparing for a career in the NFL, and O’Brien shared his thoughts on the player some would like the Texans to take.

“Johnny Manziel’s a very exciting player,” O’Brien said. “We’re a long way from deciding who we’re going to draft, or if we even draft at that position. That’ll be an organizational decision to be made by Rick Smith, myself, and obviously the McNairs. We’re a long way away from that.”

The 2014 NFL Draft is May 8-10, and the Texans have the first overall pick.

O’Brien, a Massachusetts native and admitted Boston Celtics fan, said it was his first time to ever sit courtside at an NBA game. He also said Rockets head coach and former Celtic Kevin McHale was one of his boyhood idols.

After the Rockets beat Los Angeles, 113-99, McHale was asked about being one of O’Brien’s favorite players, and ended his press conference with a doozy.

“He must be old,” McHale said. “That’s all I can say.”
