BWTB: Final Four Connections

Posted Apr 9, 2014

A look at the connections between the Texans and this year's NCAA Final Four.

The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament came to a conclusion this past Monday night, as the University of Connecticut defeated the Kentucky Wildcats 60-54 to capture the program's fourth National Championship. The event, held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, drew a record 79,328 fans for the final game.

Although college basketball and professional football don't often mix, there were several Texans connections to this past weekend's festivities at AT&T Stadium.

First off, one of the final four teams was Wisconsin, which is the alma mater of Texans star J.J. Watt. Watt was in attendance for Saturday's Final Four matchup, cheering on his Badgers as they faced off against Kentucky. Watt, who was seated a few spots down from fellow Wisconsin alum and now Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, was featured on the scoreboard during the game.

Watt also made news for appearing in a photo that he wasn't supposed to, producing this epic photo bomb of Wilson's snapshot with a fan.

Watt's team failed to advance however, falling to Kentucky on a last second three-pointer.

That shot brings us to our second Texans connection, as the Wildcat guard who hit that important trey is a local product. Actually, he's part of a tandem, as Aaron and his twin brother Andrew Harrison are from the Houston area, having played at Travis High School in nearby Richmond.

The twins, both proud Texans fans, showcased their talent in front of the world, putting on a dazzling display that vaulted Kentucky into the national final. Aaron in particular made a habit in the tournament of hitting the matchup's most important shot, including that pivotal three against Wisconsin mentioned above.

At the National Championship Game on Monday, the Harrison twins were being watched by another famous Texans connection. President George W. Bush was in attendance, and was sitting next to President Bill Clinton during Monday's matchup.

Bush of course has watched several Texans games at Reliant Stadium, and joined his father (President George H.W. Bush) at this year's Military Appreciation Day matchup against the St. Louis Rams.
