BWTB: Improving in the offseason

Antonio Smith discusses watching his game film and what he studies each offseason.

Coaches are not the only ones to watch game film during the offseason. Players collect game film of themselves to watch on their time off too. Antonio Smith is no exception. He likes to study the effectiveness of his pass rush technique.

“At the end of every year, I ask (defensive line coach) Bill (Kollar) to give me all my game film,” Smith said on his radio show December 17. “Every year in the offseason I watch it. He also gives me best pass rushes and things like that. Then what I do is, I go in and evaluate what moves are working best and what people are doing to stop it. You always have your go-to move and then you have to have some countermoves that you can create when people try to stop you.”

Smith has several moves in his arsenal that he likes to use and frequently creates new ones. He’s also affectionately named them.

“My age-old move that I’ve had since college, which is just a quick hand chop, I call that the Mr. Miyagi,” Smith said. “I’ve got the Reggie White hump move. That’s for Reggie White. I got my Hot Sauce, it’s a juke move. Then I’ve got my signature strongest right arm.”

Smith finished the 2013 season, his fifth with the Texans, with 29 tackles, 5 sacks, 12 quarterback hits, 1 pass defensed, and 1 forced fumble.
