Battle Red Ladies kick off "Fantasy Draft” event

Posted Jul 17, 2013

The Battle Red Ladies presented by State Farm hosted their second annual “Fundamentals of Fantasy” event Tuesday evening at the House of Blues.

The Battle Red Ladies presented by State Farm hosted their second annual “Fundamentals of Fantasy” event Tuesday evening at the House of Blues. Lady Texan fans brought their team spirit and their fantasy football questions about general rules, draft day tips, strategy, player rankings, and more.

A panel of five experts: Texans Radio Fantasy Girl Erin Skelley, former Texan and SportsRadio 610 host Seth Payne, Texans Insider Deepi Sidhu, State Farm representative Brandon Herndon, and Texans quarterback T.J. Yates answered questions and debated among themselves. The experts discussed the merits of taking a running back or a quarterback in the first round, Arian Foster vs. Adrian Peterson for the first-overall pick (Battle Red Ladies seemed to be unanimous on this front), top rookie draft picks (Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was a panel favorite), dealing with waivers, and general draft-day do’s and don’ts. Yates admitted he was an absentee owner and Seth Payne joked about his and most NFL players’ dislike for the real-life waiver wire.

The Voice of the Texans, Marc Vandermeer, was also the voice of the event, acting as emcee to a sold-out crowd of 150 women.  Women enjoyed complimentary hors d’oeuvres and had an opportunity to meet T.J. Yates, who later signed autographs for fans.

The panel along with other seven other Houston Texans employees then participated in a 12-team mock draft. Each team owner made their first-round pick and discussed their choice, ranging anywhere from picking a favorite player (such as Arian Foster), to picking the best-looking (an obvious no-no in draft strategy) to picking players based on their 2012 stats and projected 2013 success.

The Fundamentals of Fantasy event kicked off in 2012 with a fantasy football league for its members which is now entering its second season. Much like the other sites, women can start a sub-league with friends or join women with similar fantasy football experience. The Fundamentals of Fantasy event is open to women of all levels, from beginner to advanced. The Battle Red Ladies club, which has grown to 8,000 women, is a free club that hosts events throughout the year and gives female Texans fans an opportunity to meet other fans.
