Baylor coach Art Briles attends practice

Posted Dec 11, 2013

Baylor head football coach Art Briles was at the Texans' practice facility on Wednesday.

Baylor football head coach Art Briles was at the Texans practice field on Wednesday. Briles is not a candidate for the Texans' head coaching position, according to Wade Phillips.

"I don’t want to start any rumors, but he’s a friend of mine for one thing. As far as those rumors, he did not want to be my offensive coordinator," Phillips said, jokingly. "He did a tremendous job at Baylor, obviously, and I was glad for him. His daughter worked with us at Dallas with the Cowboys. So I’ve known him for several years and congratulated him certainly for a tremendous year.”

Briles was also a mentor to Case Keenum who spoke highly of the Baylor coach, who had spent five seasons as head coach for University of Houston's football team from 2003-2007. While Keenum exchanged text messages with Briles Tuesday night, he did not get a chance to talk with him much at practice.

"Coach Briles has been one of my really good friends for a long time," Keenum said. "He's my college coach that recruited me. The only guy that gave me a scholarship. Proud to know him, proud of him this year."

The Texans are currently searching for their next head coach after dismissing Gary Kubiak following Thursday's loss to Jacksonville.
