Bill O’Brien pleased with Xavier Su’a-Filo

Posted Aug 11, 2014

Rookie offensive lineman Xavier Su’a-Filo has impressed head coach Bill O’Brien.

Xavier Su’a-Filo has impressed head coach Bill O’Brien.

The rookie offensive lineman has shown he can learn multiple positions and play them effectively.

“I think it is hard for a rookie to come in on the interior of the offensive line and get used to that right away,” O’Brien said. “You know, everybody is stronger, everybody is quicker. There is a guy there that has improved. He’s played tackle, he’s played guard and he’s done some quarterback-center exchange in the pre practice. He’s a guy that is doing a lot and is getting better every day.”

After finishing up his final semester at UCLA and missing time during OTAs, Su’a-Filo has gotten up to speed quickly. With right guard Brandon Brooks on the Non-Football Injury list since the start of camp, Su’a-Filo has gotten an increasing number of reps and more so following his performance Saturday at Arizona.

“I think that the one thing that helps us with him is he is able to play center," O'Brien said. "When you learn center, you really learn all the calls and the blocking assignments for the whole line because you are the captain of the ship along with the quarterback. That is a good thing for him.”

Su’a-Filo played left tackle and guard in Saturday’s preseason game at Arizona.
