Bill O'Brien: Jadeveon Clowney is a "unique talent"

Posted Apr 1, 2014

Bill O'Brien discussed how South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney would fit in the Texans defense if he was drafted. If.

With just over five weeks remaining in until the 2014 NFL Draft, head coach Bill O’Brien answered questions about Houston’s No. 1 pick in a Town Hall meeting for fans and suite holders. It was no surprise that South Carolina’s Jadeveon Clowney was the only non-quarterback player asked about, just days before his Pro Day on April 2.

“If we decide to draft this guy, we’re not just going to play him at one position,” O’Brien said. “We may start him off at one position but use him in a lot of different ways. He’s a unique talent but again, that’s if we draft him.”

O’Brien, who emphasized the word “if,” likes players who understand different positions. If drafted, Clowney’s role would be a versatile one, along with J.J. Watt’s in Romeo Crennel’s base 3-4 defense that would see multiple variations.

With 11 picks in this year’s draft, O’Brien hopes to add to a Texans roster he feels is “mentally tough.” O’Brien also mentioned studying other top draft prospects, similar to Clowney, who played 4-3 defensive ends in college.
