Bill O'Brien explains importance of Romeo Crennel

Posted Jan 23, 2018

HC Bill O'Brien feels fortunate to have Romeo Crennel on staff with the Texans.

Romeo Crennel is a valuable part of the Houston Texans.

In 2017, he spent the season as an associate head coach after he was the team's defensive coordinator the previous three. With Mike Vrabel's exit to become head coach at Tennessee, Bill O'Brien said he feels "very fortunate" Crennel is a key part of the Texans staff.

"You know how important Romeo is to me personally," the Texans head coach said at a Senior Bowl media gathering in Mobile. "Obviously the coaching resume speaks for itself. But Romeo's a great person."

In 2016, Crennel engineered a Texans defense that was best in the NFL with the fewest yards allowed per game. The Texans are looking to re-capture that success in 2018, and O'Brien explained why Crennel is such a valuable assistant.

"He's a guy that you can go in there and talk to," O'Brien said. "Talk about all different kinds of things relative to coaching, relative to off-the-field. Players have a great deal of respect for him. He's the same guy every day. He's a really good person."

O'Brien, Crennel and the Texans are coaching the South Squad this week at the Senior Bowl.
