Bill Parcells' mantra sticks with GM Brian Gaine

Posted Jan 17, 2018

Pro Football Hall of Famer Bill Parcells had a big influence on Texans GM Brian Gaine.

Brian Gaine's introduction to the NFL as a scout came under a football legend.

With the Jets in 1999, Gaine joined an organization that was run by Bill Parcells. Then the General Manager and head coach, Parcells' impact on the new scout was immeasurable.

"I can't say this enough: he really taught me the value and the essence of building a strong football program, and what a football culture looked like," Gaine said. "That's equally as important. I had a chance to witness it get built and not just hear about it or read about it."

Gaine would later work with Parcells in Dallas as an assistant director of Pro scouting, and in Miami as an asisstant director of player personnel. He would move up the ladder to become the Dolphins' director of player personnel, and ultimately the team's assistant general manager.

Now the Texans general manager, Gaine said he hasn't had a chance to chat with his mentor, but he knows what Parcells will say to him when they eventually talk.

"I'm certain I'm going to hear one thing, and that's 'Hey, your job is to get the coach (some) players,'" Gaine said. "I can hear him in my ear right now and that's one message that he alway communicated to us when we were together in the scouting department. Our job is to ultimately get the coach players. We get the coach good players, then that can impact a winning performance on Sundays."

Gaine and the Texans scouting and coaching staffs will head to Mobile next week for the Senior Bowl practices and game.
