Bob McNair on Raiders, San Antonio

Posted Jul 30, 2014

Team founder, chairman and CEO Bob McNair spoke Wednesday about the reports of the Raiders' interest in moving to San Antonio.

Bob McNair wasn't surprised by the reports of the Raiders' interest in San Antonio. The founder, chairman and CEO of the Texans met with the media during Wednesday's practice and shared his thoughts on the potential of a third NFL team in Texas.

“The Raiders need a new stadium and they are going to be visiting with any city that is interested in them and offering the prospects of a new stadium," McNair said. "So it’s not surprising at all that they would visit with San Antonio, but we’ll see how all of that develops.”

The Raiders and Oakland have negotiated about staying, and McNair said they "need a new facility". Currently, they share O.co Coliseum with the Athletics of Major League Baseball, and that stadium opened in 1966. McNair added that there's always a chance to get "something agreed upon" between the city and the NFL team. Ultimately, he stressed the best interests of the NFL are his concern.

“I wouldn’t oppose it just because they are in San Antonio," McNair said. "I’m in favor of doing what strengthens the league and where it makes sense. We need to have strong franchises. We want it to be a competitive league for a long time, and to do that, you got to have strong franchises wherever they are.”

The Texans play at Oakland in Week 2 of the regular season, Sunday September 14.
