Brandon Weeden preparing as backup QB

With Tom Savage out and Brock Osweiler named the starter, Brandon Weeden will be the Texans No. 2 quarterback for Saturday’s playoff game against Oakland.

“We just came off the practice field,” offensive coordinator George Godsey said Wednesday. “Spent a little bit of extra time with him on the reps. He’s in the back there watching. Definitely spent a little bit more time with him making sure he’s set for the game plan.”

Weeden, in his fifth NFL season and second with the Texans, has been inactive for all but two games this season, Week 13 at Green Bay and Week 14 at Indianapolis, when Savage was dealing with an elbow injury.

“Feel good about his attention all season long,” Godsey said. “He’s in a tough position on some weeks where he may not be active, but he’s handled it professionally. That’s how we will continue the week.”

Last November, the Texans claimed Weeden off waivers after he played in four games with three starts with Dallas. He entered the Week 15 matchup against the Colts after T.J. Yates left with an injury in the second quarter. In the team’s first-ever win in Indianapolis, Weeden orchestrated a 10-play, 90-yard drive in the fourth quarter that ended in an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jaelen Strong. One week later, Weeden started against Tennessee and became the first player in franchise history with two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown in a game.

The Texans AFC Wild Card game against the Oakland Raiders takes place Saturday at NRG Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 3:35 p.m. CT on ESPN/ABC and SportsRadio 610.
