Breakfast: Texans host showcase

Posted Feb 10, 2015

For the 7th straight year, the Texans hosted an event that helped local high school seniors get scholarships to play football.

Hundreds of senior football players from Houston-area high schools participated in the seventh annual Greater Houston Senior Football Showcase on Saturday at the Houston Methodist Training Center.

The Greater Houston Senior Football Showcase was organized in conjunction with the Houston Texans. More than 75 local area high school coaches assisted with the event, and several NFL Alumni members were on hand to help out.

In its six-year history, the Showcase generated more than $50 million in scholarships for more than 500 student-athletes.

It's also provided an opportunity for local area high school seniors who did not sign Division I scholarship letters to showcase their skills and academic prowess to Division II, III and NAIA colleges to receive scholarship offers to continue their education. The event was free of charge to the student-athletes and to the universities. But first and foremost, the showcase was an educational initiative.  All student-athletes were required to pre-register for the event and had to meet and provide documentation of set SAT/ACT educational requirements and transcripts with certain GPA requirements.

Participants broke into groups, and linemen and skill position players tested in the 40-yard dash, bench press and running drills.  After, the student-athletes met with the university representatives in attendance.

More than 500 student-athletes representing over 120 area high schools participated, and coaches from 53 universities came from across Texas and from as far as Minnesota, Ohio and Connecticut.

There were 150 high schools, 43 colleges and 404 seniors that participated in the Showcase in 2014, which generated more than $10 million in academic scholarship offers.
