Chris Jones, Alan Bonner could be sleepers of 2013 class

Posted Apr 27, 2013

Texans general manager Rick Smith and head coach Gary Kubiak discussed said sixth-round draft picks Chris Jones and Alan Bonner are ones to keep an eye on.

Every year after the draft, Texans general manager Rick Smith and coach Gary Kubiak are asked by John McClain of the Houston Chronicle to name a player to keep an eye on who was picked after the first three rounds.

That tradition continued on Saturday afternoon at Smith and Kubiak’s draft-ending press conference in the press box at Reliant Stadium.

Smith named defensive tackle Chris Jones, a sixth-round pick from Bowling Green who was the MAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2012.

“I really liked him,” Smith said. “I think when he comes in the building, just the way that he approaches the game and the kind of make-up that he has, I think it’s going to be very hard to keep him off the field because he just plays relentlessly, and very productive.”

Kubiak said he also likes Jones but went with wide receiver Alan Bonner, a sixth-round draft pick from Jacksonville State.

“I just loved watching this guy work in Indianapolis (at the NFL Scouting Combine), his confidence,” Kubiak said. “I think there’s a big upside here. There’s a big step for him to take from where he’s coming from, but he’s gonna get a great opportunity with us. We’re so young at wide receiver, there’s gonna be plenty of reps to go around, and I think this kid’s got some special stuff to him. We’ll just sit there and work with him, but I think he’s got a chance to help our football team.”
