Cierre Wood seizes chance in Texans debut

Running back Cierre Wood led the way with 59 rushing yards on 10 carries in the preseason win at Minnesota.

The spotlight typically evades running backs for the Houston Texans not named Arian Foster or Ben Tate. Especially if you’re an undrafted rookie free agent. But for just a bit on Friday night in Minneapolis, Cierre Wood came out of the shadows.

The Notre Dame star rumbled for a game-high 59 yards on 10 carries, and peeled off the longest run of the contest with a 20-yarder on 3rd-and-2 in the third quarter.

“I felt I made a tremendous impact,” Wood said. “That’s just a little bit of what I can do. I really didn’t take that long to get started. I just wanted to get out there and prove I could play this game with everybody else.”

Wood, Deji Karim, Ray Graham and Dennis Johnson carried 27 times for 133 yards on Friday evening, and the offensive line often cleared wide running lanes.

The line was great,” Wood said. “They did everything they were supposed to be doing and more. It just shows this team has a lot of great things to come.”

Head coach Gary Kubiak was pleased with Wood’s performance, and said the former member of the Fighting Irish did better than expected.

“He has been doing some good things,” Kubiak said. “He exceeded expectations. He has talent and he has opportunity, and when those two things come together, good things happen.”
