Coaches Commentary: Karl Dorrell on QB Matt Schaub

Posted Jul 15, 2013

Quarterbacks coach Karl Dorrell shared his analysis of Matt Schaub in this edition of Coaches Commentary.

Coaches Commentary: RB | WR

*At the conclusion of June's minicamp, HoustonTexans.com huddled with the team's position coaches to get their respective thoughts on the projected starters. This is the third 'Coaches Commentary' in a series of articles that will go through the roster, position by position.

Quarterbacks coach Karl Dorrell's second year on the job was his first chance to have an offseason to work with and observe Matt Schaub. A year ago at this time, Schaub was still in the process of returning from a foot injury he suffered in November of 2011. Still, the veteran signal-caller started every regular season game, as well as both playoff contests, and guided the Texans to 13 wins when you include the postseason. What follows is Dorrell's evaluation of Schaub.

QB Matt Schaub
4008 yds, 22 TD/12 INT passing in 2012 regular season
90.7 QB rating in 2012 regular season

“Matt had a really good season in terms of coming off his injury in 2011 and getting himself to win some of those accolades towards the end of the year like the Pro Bowl.

But I think it wasn’t enough. In his mind and in my mind, there’s so much more he can bring to the table. He’s already a great leader. He’s already a guy that really can operate this offense at the highest level with efficiency. We know that from our standpoint there was definitely stuff that we left on the table last year.

He’s had an excellent offseason. He’s in great shape physically, and I think he’s ready to take it up a notch going into 2013. If you’re an elite player in this league, you’re able to be a crunch time player. I know Matt’s really right there; he’s on the cusp of being one of those players.

I think in his mind he knows he can play better, and he would like to put this on his shoulders and get this team to the Super Bowl.“
