Rookie defensive end
The Houston native and University of Houston product tore a ligament in his left big toe in practice on Thursday. Hunter said doctors told him he’ll be out for about three months, which would equate to a season-ending injury.
“Very unfortunate situation,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. “He hurt his toe on I think one of the last plays of practice yesterday and unfortunately, he’s got to have surgery on Monday. We thought it was going to be OK.”
Hunter, who the Texans signed as an undrafted free agent, said he thinks the injury happened when he stepped on a teammate’s foot.
“It’s kind of a freak accident,” Hunter said. “It definitely hurts a lot. I was really excited about getting an opportunity to play with the fellas, but at the same time, it’s part of the game. I’ve just got to do whatever I’ve got to do to come back.”
Hunter told the media on Wednesday that it was “real sweet” to be called up to the active roster for his hometown team.
“This does nothing but add a little fuel to my fire,” he said. “It was already burning. Now, I just want to do it even more so I (can) come back and show them that they didn’t make a bad decision by moving me up.”
Hunter was signed to take the roster spot of defensive end
