Do players prepare for offseason workouts?

Players report to NRG Stadium on April 17, but many have already begun their offseason workouts.

In just over a month, the Texans will report to NRG Stadium for the 2017 offseason workout program. Before that April 17 date even arrives, many will begin, or have already begun, to ramp up their own exercise regimen. For ten-year veteran left tackle Duane Brown, that begins now.

“I start picking up the intensity more here in the next week or two,” Brown said March 7 on Texans Radio. “Get into more football-specific stuff and a lot more cardio and things like that.”

Brown added that he first gives his body time to recover from the season, usually a period of several weeks, or until most of the aches and pains have subsided. He likes to show up in relatively good shape though, so the All-Pro keeps active with regular workouts and playing basketball. However, every player’s timetable for the offseason program varies.

“Some people just do regular workouts and wait until those (offseason) workouts to pick it up and some people start earlier than now,” Brown said. “I try to wait about a month or so out before I really start to get intense with my stuff.”

The NFL offseason program, which includes OTAs (organized team activities) lasts nine weeks and is voluntary.
