EZ Nwachukwu: WR...and Technician?

Posted Aug 2, 2014

Second-year wide receiver EZ Nwachukwu has a specific goal in mind when trying to improve and help the team.

Being a great teammate.

Staying in the playbook.

They're simple goals, yes. But goals that EZ Nwachukwu and the rest of the Texans have all repeated when asked this offseason. The second-year pass catcher, though, got more specific when he was asked about how he's tried to improve as an individual. It's all about better route running, for the former Aggie.

"The top of my routes; getting in and out of my cuts," Nwachukwu said. "Just being a technician. I want to be known as a technician. You have to know your route depths. You have to know everything about the route: not just what it says on paper."

After spending 2013 on the practice squad, Nwachukwu is fighting to make the 53-man roster. His performance through a week of training camp has been impressive, as he's caught everything thrown his way.

"I'm trying to," Nwachukwu said. "That's kind of my job title: to catch the ball and make plays. Gotta keep catching them out there."

The new offense installed by head coach Bill O'Brien will be different than what's been run in Houston over the last eight years. With the scheme change, will likely come new faces catching passes as well. Ultimately, Nwachukwu is enthused about what 2014 holds.

"It's going to be an exciting offense," Nwachukwu said. "Everybody's going to be everywhere. There's going to be a lot of formations, a lot of schemes. I think it's going to be pretty fun for us."

Nwachukwu and the Texans play their first game next Saturday night at Arizona.
