Ed Reed rehabbing in Atlanta, joining Texans soon

Posted May 29, 2013

Safety Ed Reed, who has been absent from OTAs as he rehabs from minor hip surgery, is expected to join the Texans before their three-day mini-camp in June.

Safety Ed Reed, who has been absent from OTAs as he rehabs from minor hip surgery, is expected to join the Texans before their mandatory three-day mini-camp from June 11-13.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak said Wednesday that Reed is now in Atlanta, where he keeps an offseason home. Reed had been in Colorado for several weeks after having surgery there in late April.

“I had a long conversation with Ed yesterday,” Kubiak said after the Texans’ fifth practice of OTAs. “I think he actually got back to Atlanta on Saturday. We have him in a rehab program there in Atlanta.”

The Baltimore Ravens, Reed’s former team, will have a private ring ceremony on June 7 to commemorate their Super Bowl XLVII victory. They also will be visiting the White House next week.

“That’s pretty important for him to get that stuff done there, but he will be back here as we approach the mandatory minicamp and be here for the rehab process,” Kubiak said. “So you guys should see him in about a week.”

The Texans signed Reed from the Ravens on March 22. He unexpectedly had surgery in late April to, according to multiple reports, repair a labral tear in his hip. The Texans have described it as a “minor procedure” and said they hope to have Reed back by the beginning or middle of training camp, which begins on July 26.

Reed’s absence in OTAs has resulted in more reps for veteran safeties Shiloh Keo and Eddie Pleasant and rookie D.J. Swearinger, the Texans’ second-round pick from South Carolina.
