Emptied Notebook: Day 4 of Texans Training Camp

Posted Jul 29, 2013

Speed skaters, words of encouragement and much more was compiled in Drew Dougherty's 'Emptied Notebook'.

*The following is a random assortment of quotes, oddities, scattershots and interesting tidbits from Monday at Texans Training Camp presented by XFINITY.

-A handful of veterans, including defensive end Antonio Smith, tight end Owen Daniels and cornerback Johnathan Joseph didn’t practice in the morning.

"I gave some older guys a break," head coach Gary Kubiak said. "So really down some bodies, but I thought the young guys really stepped up and did some good things in practice. Now, we’re to the point where we’ll be out there full-time.”

The team was outside at the Houston Methodist Training Center from 8 a.m until about 9:15 a.m., before moving inside.

-While working out on the side field along with receiver DeVier Posey, safety Ed Reed would yell words of encouragement to his defensive teammates. He was especially vociferous after safety Shiloh Keo broke up a pass.

-Chad Hedrick watched the morning practice from the sidelines. The speed skater won gold in the 5000 meters at the 2006 Winter Olympics. In all, he medaled five times in two trips to the Olympics.

-Portions of ESPN’s ‘SportsCenter’ were live from Texans training camp. Defensive end J.J. Watt joined Stan Verrett and Darren Woodson on set. Kubiak also was on for a segment, and the duo of quarterback Andre Johnson and Matt Schaub spoke with Verrett as well.

-Rookie safety D.J. Swearinger wears a lot of wristbands and tape.

-During the move outside to inside, the quartet of Johnson, Daniels, Reed and running back Arian Foster again caught passes from the JUGS machine. At one point in the rotation, Foster’s turn was up, but he asked for another opportunity or two and wound up snagging a pass with just one hand. His exploits were met with polite applause from the dozens of fans watching up close.

-The team practiced for about 40 minutes inside. Just after 9:40 a.m., the shoulder pads and helmets came off for the final part of the morning’s work.

-Former Texans J.J. Moses and Seth Payne were both on hand at the morning practice, watching from the sidelines.

-For the bulk of the indoor work in the morning, Reed was stationed just to the left of defensive backs coach Vance Joseph. Those two were about 25 yards behind the defense.

-During the special teams portion, receivers Keshawn Martin and Alan Bonner fielded punts with running back Dennis Johnson.

-The last player to leave the field indoors was Daniels. He spent a good chunk of time catching tennis balls from the machine described yesterday.

-Part of the squad worked on special teams during a 45-minute afternoon practice inside.

-For fans coming to any of the open practices, the 2013 NFL stadium bag policy will be in effect. For more information on that, click here.
