Fantasy Football: Week 16 Waiver Pickups

Posted Dec 17, 2013

Erin Skelley, aka “Erin the Fantasy Girl” on Texans Radio/Sports Radio 610 in Houston, dishes out waiver wire magic for Week 16.

At the risk of seeming ungrateful, I admit I wanted 10 touchdowns from Jamaal Charles. Is that too unreasonable? Too greedy? I mean 195 receiving yards and five scores was pretty nice – and I’m sure he tried really hard. But next time, I’d like Jamaal to check the fantasy scoreboard so he understands the insurmountable and horrifying deficit I’m facing.

Perhaps we need better communication – something – so he can routinely rescue me from my fantasy messes (or any other messes, poor decisions, etc. – lots of rescuing needed). With miserable performances from Drew Brees, Shane Vereen and the New Orleans defense (good grief, it’s the Rams!), I needed a miracle. And Charles did deliver. Indeed he did! But I sweated all day Sunday. All. Day. And that’s a real shame.

But in the end – after nearly 11 hours of psychotically alternating between Sunday Ticket, StatTracker and a vomit bag – I was victorious. So I guess five was enough. Would have been a cruel – yet justified – ending to have lost to six Justin Tucker field goals.

Cheers to those who were victorious this weekend! Tonight I am toasting cheap wine to you. Ok, now let’s prepare for the Super Bowl. Here are this week’s waiver wire pickups:

Kirk Cousins, QB, Washington Redskins – I’m not a big fan of “I told you so”… at least when others do it. But if you listened to Sunday’s Houston Texans pre-game show, Cousins was my sneaky play of the week. He delivered with 381 yards and three touchdowns. Now, he wasn’t perfect. His inexperience showed as he threw a couple of careless balls for interceptions, and also lost a fumble. Still, an impressive performance for the RG3 replacement. Even better, he faces Dallas on Sunday. Yummy. Available in 89 percent of Yahoo leagues.

Jordan Todman, RB, Jacksonville Jaguars – No Maurice? No problem. Todman stepped in for Maurice Jones-Drew on Sunday with 109 yards on 25 carries. Next up is the Titans, who are weak against he run. That’s the good news. Unfortunately, we don’t yet know MJD’s status. Should know by Wednesday. Make room for Todman on your Super Bowl bench, and start him if he plays. Available in 81 percent of Yahoo leagues.

Matt Asiata, RB, Minnesota Vikings – Asiata’s 51 yards would have been rather ho-hum, except that he also scored three touchdowns. Not bad for his first NFL start. Still unsure of the status of both Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart. Stay tuned. Available in 93 percent of Yahoo leagues.

Tim Wright, TE, Tampa Bay Buccaneers – I realize it might be too difficult to talk about, but do you have a replacement for Rob Gronkowski? Check out Wright who has touchdowns in the last two games. Available in 85 percent of Yahoo leagues.

Detroit Lions, DEF – Two words. Eli Manning.
