GM Rick Smith: Texans "open" to trading pick

Posted May 1, 2014

Texans general manager Rick Smith met with the Houston media Thursday and said the team is open to trading the 1st overall pick.

As he does every year, Texans general manager Rick Smith addressed the Houston media days before the NFL Draft. He and the Texans know who they would take first overall.

But they might not necessarily pick first a week from tonight.

"If we take the first pick, we know who we want," Smith said Thursday afternoon. "We are obviously open to moving out of the first pick, if in fact there's an opportunity for us to do so, and we think that's in the best interests of the organization."

On an annual basis, regardless of the spot in the draft, Smith has said the team will always entertain the idea of trading. It's a bit more newsworthy this time around, because the franchise has the first pick in all seven rounds, along with three compensatory picks and one more via a trade with Oakland.

"I know the order of our board," Smith said. "I know that if we select first, it's a unique opportunity obviously to be the first pick. So if we do select there, I know who we feel good about there."

Smith began his press conference by lauding the evaluation process spearheaded by Director of College Scouting Mike MacCagnan and his staff of scouts.

The 2014 NFL Draft begins Thursday, May 8 with the first round. The second and third rounds are on Friday night, and rounds four through seven are on Saturday May 10.
