Gary Kubiak says next few days an "evaluation stage"

Posted Oct 7, 2013

Head coach Gary Kubiak said Matt Schaub is still his starting quarterback, but that the next few days will be used for "evaluation".

At his weekly press conference on Monday afternoon at Reliant Stadium, head coach Gary Kubiak reiterated that Matt Schaub is the starting quarterback. The Texans were dominated by a 34-3 margin at Candlestick Park, and fell to 2-3 in 2013.

He also said that the next couple of days will be spent trying to fix what's wrong and figure out the best course of action for the immediate future.

"I’m in an evaluation stage right now, today and tomorrow," Kubiak said. "I’m trying to figure out what’s the best way for us to go be successful this weekend. Every player’s a part of the evaluation, and our quarterback is too. But yes, he is our quarterback.”

Schaub's first pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown during Sunday night's loss at San Francisco. That third-and-six gaffe from the Texans' own 16-yard line was the first of three picks that Schaub threw on the evening. Backup T.J. Yates relieved Schaub to start the fourth quarter. When Kubiak was asked about what the "evaluation stage" the next few days will mean, he elaborated.

“It doesn’t mean anything," Kubiak said. "It just means I’m evaluating our situation. We’re not playing well enough right now. I’m obviously very disappointed in turning the ball over and I’m trying to make a decision what I think gives us the best chance to win Sunday.”

The Texans host the Rams this Sunday at noon, and Kubiak said he needs to see a better performance from his team and from Schaub, who was 19-of-35 passing for 173 yards.

“I think it’s a huge game," Kubiak said. "It’s big because of what we’ve gone through these past three weeks. The only way you fix those things is you go back and play and do things better. I can’t wait for that opportunity to get here.”
