Houston Texans sign seven in draft class

Posted May 16, 2014

The Houston Texans have signed seven of the team’s 2014 10-member draft class, it was announced today.

HOUSTON TEXANS SIGN SEVEN IN DRAFT CLASS
Team signs NT Nix III, QB Savage, DE Pagan, RB Blue, FB Prosch, CB Hal and S Ballentine

HOUSTON – The Houston Texans have signed seven of the team’s 2014 10-member draft class, it was announced today. Third-round pick NT Louis Nix III, fourth-round QB Tom Savage (Pittsburgh), sixth-rounders, Alabama DE Jeoffrey Pagan, LSU RB Alfred Blue and Auburn FB Jay Prosch, and seventh-rounders, Vanderbilt CB Andre Hal and Memphis S Lonnie Ballentine signed with the Texans today. Terms of their contracts were not disclosed.

The Texans traded their first pick in the fourth and fifth rounds to Philadelphia to move up and select Nix III (6-2,331) with the 83rd overall pick. Nix III was a 2013 preseason All-America selection but had his season limited to eight games due to a knee injury. For his career, Nix III recorded 123 tackles, 14 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks as one of the nation’s top run-stoppers.

Savage (6-4, 228) was taken with the 135th overall pick and threw for 2,958 yards, 21 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 238-of-389 (61.2 percent) passing in 2013. He is the highest-drafted quarterback for the franchise since Dave Ragone was taken in the third round of the 2003 draft.

Pagan (6-3, 310), who helped Alabama win a pair of national titles as a freshman and sophomore, was taken with the first pick of the sixth round. He played through a shoulder injury as a junior in 2013 to start 11 games and record 34 tackles with two sacks and a blocked kick.

Blue (6-2, 223) was taken with the 181st overall pick and was the second of Houston’s three sixth-round selections in this year’s draft. He rushed for 1,253 yards and 11 touchdowns at LSU, playing in 40 games with seven starts. Blue began the 2012 season as LSU’s starting running back and averaged 112 yards rushing per game before suffering a season-ending knee injury in the third game of the season. He bounced back to play in 13 games for LSU in 2013, rushing for 343 yards and a touchdown on 71 carries (4.8 average).

Prosch (6-1, 256) became the first fullback drafted by the Texans since 2002 when he was taken with the 211th overall pick. Primarily used as a blocker, Prosch was named first-team All-America by the NFL Draft Report following the 2013 season. For his collegiate career, Prosch started 30 of the 51 games he appeared in and rushed for 47 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries, and caught 11 passes for 115 yards. Prosch played two seasons at Illinois before transferring to Auburn for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

Hal (5-10, 188) led the Southeastern Conference with 18 passes defensed in 11 starts as a senior and was twice named second team All-SEC in his career. He recorded 133 career tackles to go along with six interceptions, two fumble recoveries and 37 passes defensed in his four years at Vanderbilt.

Ballentine (6-3, 219) was taken with the 256th overall pick and was one of the largest safeties drafted this year. He played in 42 games throughout his career at Memphis and made 176 tackles with 13 passes defensed, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. As a senior, he made 58 tackles and tied a career high with five passes defensed.

Following are the 2014 draft picks who the Houston Texans have signed:
