Houstonians aid city at Texans Care Volunteer Day

Posted May 13, 2013

Hundreds of Houstonians lent a helping hand all around the city at the inaugural Texans Care Volunteer Day on Saturday morning.

Hundreds of Houstonians lent a helping hand all around the city at the inaugural Texans Care Volunteer Day on Saturday morning. The Houston Food Bank, Avondale House and United Way of Greater Houston were just a few of the charitable organizations flooded with Texans fans, players, Texans Cheerleaders, TORO and Texans staff who spent four hours giving back to the community.

Among the Texans volunteers were Pro Bowl left tackle Duane Brown, wide receiver Lestar Jean, nose tackle Earl Mitchell, tackle Derek Newton and more. Texans president Jamey Rootes took part in the morning’s events as well and was elated by the outpouring of support from all across Houston.

“We had heard from our fans over and over, ‘As you go out in the community, is there a way we can volunteer with you?’” Rootes said. “This is our first step in that. We think this can make a big impact for Houston.”

United Way of Greater Houston President & CEO Anna Babin was very appreciative of those who dedicated their morning to assist in the organization’s efforts. At the United Way, volunteers built hygiene kits for people in shelters and learning kits for children in United Way Bright Beginnings Center.

“What it does for the community is it reaches out to a lot of different organizations that would get support that they normally would not get,” Babin said of the event. “I think what it shows is that there’s this great love for this community and a great love for the Houston Texans, and it’s a great formula to put it all together today.”
