J.J. Watt credited with additional sack

Posted Dec 5, 2012

Texans defensive end J.J. Watt has been credited with a second sack from Sunday’s game at Tennessee.

Texans defensive end J.J. Watt has been credited with a second sack from Sunday’s game at Tennessee. He now has 16.5 sacks this season, one behind Aldon Smith for the NFL lead.

Watt’s additional sack comes from a play he made on Titans quarterback Jake Locker in the fourth quarter. The play initially was scored as a “team sack” because Locker slipped and fumbled the ball right before Watt made contact with him. The adjusted ruling gives Watt two sacks in the Titans game and six sacks in the last three weeks.

Watt’s 16.5 sacks ties Michael Strahan (2001) and Lawrence Taylor (1986) for the third-most sacks through a team’s first 12 games since sacks became official in 1982. Only Mark Gastineau (18.5 in 1984) and Smith (17.5 this season) have had more.

Watt, 23, is on pace for 22 sacks this season. The NFL record is 22.5, set by Strahan in 2001. Watt also has 15 passes defensed, putting him on pace for 20. He already holds the distinction of being the first player in NFL history with 15 sacks and 15 passes defensed in a single season.
