J.J. Watt disrupts, despite loss to Jags

Posted Nov 24, 2013

Defensive end J.J. Watt turned in another excellent performance on Sunday, despite the loss to Jacksonville.

Nine tackles.

Two tackles for a loss.

Five quarterback hits.

A sack.

A blocked field goal.

And in the aftermath, little more than anguish and frustration from the 2012 NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

For J.J. Watt and the Texans, the opponent was different, but the outcome was the same. Houston fell to Jacksonville by a 13-6 margin, despite another superlative effort from the defensive end.

"I play as hard as I can possibly play," Watt said. "Over the last nine weeks I have come back here, taken a shower, and become extremely frustrated.”

Watt dropped quarterback Chad Henne for a 7-yard loss on 3rd-and-3 at the Houston 39-yard line, forcing a Jacksonville punt. It was the fifth straight game he notched a sack, and brought his season total to 9.5.

His two tackles for loss brought his season total to 17, and if his sack is included, he was part of nine different tackles that resulted in a loss of yards, no gain, or a gain of two yards or less.

"When you have J.J. Watt on the other side, you have to give him a lot of respect," Jacksonville running back Maurice Jones-Drew said. "He does a great job for them. He disrupts."

Watt also got a hand on Josh Scobee's 49-yard field goal attempt with 0:57 remaining in the third quarter. It helped the Texans keep it a one-score game, as the Jaguars were leading 10-7 at the time of the block. Despite his heroics, Watt was disappointed.

“This isn’t what anybody expected," Watt said. "It sucks and it’s not very fun.”

Watt entered the game atop the NFL in both quarterback hits and tackles for loss. He now has 35 of the former, and 17 of the latter.
