J.J. Watt gets text from famous rapper

Posted Aug 12, 2017

J.J. Watt found out about his brother's NFL debut in a text from Kendrick Lamar.

J.J. Watt was engrossed in training camp meetings when he found out about T.J. Watt’s NFL debut Friday night. Not only did his younger brother have a highlight-reel worthy night, Watt received the news from seven-time Grammy winning rapper Kendrick Lamar.

“I came out of my meeting and I actually had a text on my phone and the first text that I saw, it was the most crazy thing in the world,” Watt said. “I read the text and it said, “I see your little bro out there balling. I hope all is well.’ And I looked and I was like, that was from Kendrick Lamar. I was like, wait a second, what did my little brother do? So I go on Google, I check it out and it said two sacks in four plays.”

T.J. Watt recorded two sacks, three quarterback hits, and a pass defensed in the Steelers preseason game. J.J. did eventually get to watch his brother – Derek Watt’s preseason opener with the Los Angeles Chargers takes place Sunday – but didn’t know if he should cheer for his brother or against the AFC rival Steelers.

"I texted him so he could see after the game what Kendrick said and I just thought that was like the craziest thing in the world, to see one of the best rappers in the world – possibly the best rapper in the world – text me about my little brother," Watt said. "But it was just so cool. It was such an awesome moment to see him go out there and do what he does. I mean, he’s a great football player. I’m very excited to watch him play. He’s worked so hard, he’s overcome a lot in his career.”

Watt praised his brother’s two sacks in four plays and even joked that he was “a little disappointed” in own four plays during the Texans preseason game at Carolina. In his first game since last year’s back surgery, Watt played just one series before exiting the Panthers game.

Watt will get his first chance to face one of his brothers this season. Last year, the four-time All-Pro was on injured reserve when the Texans hosted the Chargers and middle brother Derek Watt in Week 12. On Christmas Day, the Texans will play the Steelers in Week 16 this season.

“That’s a long way away and we’re very much looking forward to that, obviously, but there’s a long ways to go to get there,” Watt said. “For now, he holds the bragging rights after one preseason game. But I’m very quick to remind him that it was a preseason game.”

The Texans will host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sept. 10 in the first game of the 2017 regular season.
