J.J. Watt loses a sack, no longer leads league

Posted Oct 11, 2012

Elias Sports Bureau has removed a sack from J.J. Watt's season total of 8.5, leaving him second in the NFL behind Clay Matthews with 7.5 sacks.

Texans defensive end J.J. Watt no longer leads the NFL in sacks.

Elias Sports Bureau, which tracks statistics for the NFL, ruled Wednesday that Watt was incorrectly credited with a sack against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1. As reported by the Houston Chronicle, Elias determined that the play in question was a designed run.

Watt now has 7.5 sacks this season, putting him second in the NFL behind Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews, who has eight. The Packers play at Reliant Stadium on Sunday Night Football in Week 6.

The statistical correction also lowers Watt's Week 1 sack total to 0.5, removing him from having the distinction of being the first player since Kevin Greene in 1998 with at least 1.5 sacks in each of the first four games of a season.

Watt still leads the AFC in sacks and has recorded a sack in every game this season. He's also tied for third in the NFL in passes defensed with eight, four more than any other defensive lineman.
