J.J. Watt wins reps, doesn't need to fight

Posted Aug 21, 2014

J.J. Watt lets his on-field play do all the talking.

J.J. Watt doesn’t get involved in on-field skirmishes.

If head coach Bill O’Brien was looking for intensity and competition, that’s what the two teams delivered. Tempers flared on Day 3 as both teams finished three days of joint practices at Denver’s Dove Valley facility.

“You win on the field,” Watt said Thursday. “You don’t have to fight when you win on the field. When you win the rep, then people tend to get chippy, so that’s fine.”

On Wednesday, during drills between the Texans defensive line and the Broncos offensive line, Watt calmly walked away from a potential scuffle with Denver’s starting left guard Orlando Franklin. For Watt, it’s pretty easy to do.

“I just don’t really feel the need to do it, you know,” Watt said. “I think it’s one of those things where it’s too much to lose. There is no reason for me to fight anybody because I’ll go out there and I’ll talk with my play on the field. That’s the way I’ve always done it, that’s the way I feel like you should do it, so let your play on the field do the talking, unless it gets to some extreme crazy point where I need to, but it hasn’t reached that point yet, so I’m OK.”

During Thursday’s practice, several incidents broke out where both teams crowded onto the field following a play. While it seemed to be a major involvement of players, it was nothing significant, according to Watt.

“I don’t think there was a real major scuffle, so that’s always a good thing,” Watt said. “It’s football. There’s testosterone going around here. People get excited. It’s football. Practicing against each other for three days, we’re professional athletes, guys get a little excited, get a little antsy, so that’s fine.”
