J.J. Watt's game-ending tackle a memorable one

Posted Sep 14, 2017

J.J. Watt helped end Thursday night's win with a thud.

The final play of Thursday night’s win over the Bengals ended with a thud. In a good way.

With two seconds left in regulation, and the Texans up 13-9 on the Bengals, Cincinnati had the ball at their own 20-yard line. Quarterback Andy Dalton took the snap out of the shotgun, threw a short pass to A.J. Green over the middle, and then organized chaos ensued.

Green lateraled back to Dalton, who would then throw back to Giovanni Bernard. Bernard picked up 13 yards, lateraled it back to Dalton, who threw back to lineman Russell Bodine. Just as he caught it, defensive end J.J. Watt folded Bodine in half and planted him into the Paul Brown Stadium turn to end the game.

“It was like zig, zag, zig zag, tired, tired, tired, thank you for throwing it to the guy close to me, body slam,” Watt said. “I was just glad the play was over.”

It capped a thrilling night for the defense, which didn’t allow a Bengals touchdown, and limited Cincinnati to just 82 rushing yards and 4-of-15 on 3rd down. When various Texans players were asked about the final play, each lit up with a smile as they told their own version of it.

“It was cool,” defensive lineman D.J. Reader said.  “J.J. made a big hit. I thought he was going to pick him up, slam him. Go rock bottom on him.”

Linebacker Dylan Cole agreed with the wrestling comparison, and said Watt definitely has a future in the WWE should he ever choose that route after football.

Defensive lineman Christian Coving enjoyed the final tackle as well.

“J.J.’s the man,” Covington said. “That’s all I gotta say. That was insane. To witness something like that, that was icing on the cake.”

Watt finished the fame with six tackles, a quarterback hit and a batted pass. The Texans travel to New England in Week 3 for a Sunday afternoon matchup with the Patriots on September 24.
