Jadeveon Clowney leaves practice early

Posted Aug 2, 2014

Jadeveon Clowney left practice early on Saturday but before he made some big plays on defense and special teams.

Jadeveon Clowney may not care if it’s only training camp, but head coach Bill O’Brien put the brakes on him Saturday.

“He’s coming off surgery and we’re just trying to manage him," O'Brien said. "He’s out there and wants to go every rep. Just like all of the guys, after seven practices, I’m sure he’s a little sore and we’ll just continue to manage him.”

The Texans No. 1 overall draft appeared to be shaken up on a play towards the end of Saturday’s practice. He walked off the field on his own, talking with Geoff Kaplan, the team’s head athletic trainer. He did not return.

“I go with Geoff Kaplan on that," O'Brien said. W"e try to measure how many reps he has at practice and keep him on a pitch count there. He wants to be in every drill. We’ll just continue to do that.”

Clowney, who underwent sports hernia surgery on June 12, is gaining more first-team reps in training camp. Before he left practice on Saturday, Clowney made several signature big plays on defense and even added one on special teams when he blocked a punt by six-time All-Pro Shane Lechler.
