Jadeveon Clowney's goal: "To go #1"

Posted Feb 22, 2014

South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney spoke Saturday about wanting to be the Texans first pick in the Draft.

Jadeveon Clowney wants to be a Houston Texan.

"Of course," Clowney said. "That's one of my goals here, to go number one. I came out of high school as the number one player, so I want to come into the League as the number one guy."

The South Carolina defensive end met with the media on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium. Clowney (6-5, 266) said he liked knowing that Texans chairman/CEO Bob McNair is a former Gamecock as well.

"When I heard that, I was kind of happy," Clowney said. "I was thinking it could give me a chance to go to the Texans hopefully."

Clowney anchored his high school 4X100 meter relay team in high school, and didn't hesitate when he was asked about his best physical attribute.

"My speed of course," Clowney said. "I’m a fast guy, quick, move well. Just my speed. Strength-wise, I am pretty strong also, just need to work on my pad leverage."

He'll get the chance to show off his wheels when he and the defensive linemen run the 40-yard dash in the coming days. Clowney said he'll likely run his in "hopefully 4.4" seconds, or 4.5 at the worst.

Clowney, Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel and Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater are the three names the media typically projects as possible first overall picks for Houston. Clowney explained why selecting him would be smarter than taking a quarterback.

"Of course you can see the Super Bowl Championship Game," Clowney said. "Defense won that game. Shut them down. Shut them out. It takes defense to win championships. Hands down."
