Kareem Jackson, Joe Mays possible game-time decisions

Two defensive starters, Kareem Jackson and Joe Mays, are looking to be game-time decisions for Sunday’s matchup against Oakland.

Two defensive starters, Kareem Jackson and Joe Mays, are looking to be game-time decisions for Sunday’s matchup against Oakland. Jackson and Mays both suffered injuries in Arizona and have been unable to practice this week.

Jackson suffered a chest contusion and had four tackles before leaving in the first half of Houston's 27-24 loss to the Cardinals. He could return to the practice field on Friday, according to Kubiak.

“We’re going to probably do a lot more teaching tomorrow and be light, so he might be able to do something tomorrow in what we’re doing,” Kubiak said. “But I think we’re heading toward a game-time decision. If not, then Brice (McCain) is ready to go.”

Inside linebacker Joe Mays will also be a game-time decision after missing practice for a second-straight day. Mays has been battling injuries to his oblique and knee.

“His knee swelled up on him,” Kubiak said. “I put him along with Kareem. I think he’ll do some light stuff tomorrow and he will be a game-time decision.”

Jeff Tarpinian, the free agent added signed on October 28, would start if Mays is unable to play against the Raiders. Tarpinian played well at Arizona considering his short time with the Texans, according to defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.

“Jeff’s done a good job,” Phillips said. “He’s a smart, young player that was thrown into a tough situation. He’s got some talent. He moves well. He knows how to cover and he made some tackles in the game. I was pleased with what he did.”
