Keenum and Savage both see time in first half

Posted Aug 28, 2014

Case Keenum and Tom Savage split reps in the first half for the Texans.

Case Keenum and Tom Savage split reps at the quarterback position in the first half as the Texans went into the locker room trailing 14-6 against the visiting San Francisco 49ers.

Keenum, getting his first preseason start under center, engineered an early scoring drive to get the Texans on the board. He led the offense on an 11-play drive, covering 56 yards and ending with a 41-yard field goal by Chris Boswell.

Keenum threw for 70 yards in the first half, completing 47 percent of his pass attempts (8-of-17). He also threw an interception.

Earlier in the week, Texans head coach Bill O'Brien indicated he was unsure about how much Keenum would play before the team turned to rookie fourth-round pick Tom Savage. "We’ll start Case and we’ll see how many plays we get there with him and then we’ll put Tom in at some point," O'Brien commented.

The play count turned out to be one quarter of football, as Savage relieved Keenum early in the second quarter.

Savage also put points on the board for the Texans, moving the offense 33 yards in seven plays. Randy Bullock connected on a 52-yard field goal to put the Texans up 6-0.

The team's fourth-round pick was 6-of-7 passing for 30 yards.
