Matt Schaub focused on being "better" for Texans

Posted Sep 25, 2013

The Texans committed several miscues as a team during the Week 3 loss at Baltimore, and quarterback Matt Schaub said he's focused on improving versus Seattle.

Three days after the Texans dropped their first game of 2013, they collectively emphasized that they must improve. On offense, Matt Schaub pointed the finger at himself.

“Ultimately as a quarterback, the ball is in your hands and it leaves your hands last,” Schaub said Wedneday. “You gotta take ownership and responsibility in everything that goes on and that’s just how I am.”

During the Texans’ 30-9 loss at Baltimore on Sunday, a Schaub interception was returned for a touchdown by Ravens’ linebacker Daryl Smith. It was just one of many costly team errors on the day, and the Texans emphasized that improvement is a necessity.

“Everybody has a certain thing that they’ve got to work on and get better as a group and better as a team,” offensive coordinator Rick Dennison said. “That’s one of the few things that we need to work on.”

With an undefeated Seahawks’ squad coming to town, Schaub said he and the Texans put the loss to the Ravens in the rearview mirror.

“Just go look to the next play to be better and put yourself and your team in a better position,” Schaub said. “That’s where my focus is: to better for my team this week. They depend on me and need me to be that, and that’s what I’m going to be.”

The Texans have turned the ball over four times on offense this season. Linebacker Brian Cushing’s interception return for a touchdown in Week 1 is the club’s lone takeaway. Seattle, meanwhile, has committed four turnovers as well, but have forced ten on the season. Head coach Gary Kubiak said the Texans must improve in that area.

“Right now, it’s not good enough,” Kubiak said. “We’ve got to get into much better mode protecting the ball and we’ve got to find a way to take it away to get on the positive side.”
