Matt Schaub struggles, but team sticks up for him

Posted Oct 7, 2013

Quarterback Matt Schaub struggled again Sunday night, but his teammates backed him following the defeat.

It was a rough night at the office for Matt Schaub. Despite that, his head coach and his teammates are still in his corner.

"Matt is my guy and he will continue to be," left tackle Duane Brown said on Sunday, "I am still confident in his ability, I still have faith in him."

The Texans fell to the 49ers Sunday evening, 34-3. On the third play from scrimmage, San Francisco cornerback Tramaine Brock picked off a Schaub pass and returned it 18 yards for a score. 90 seconds into the game Houston was in a 7-0 hole. It was the fourth straight game in which a Schaub interception was returned for a touchdown, and the quarterback agreed that  they'd "hit rock bottom", as his head coach Gary Kubiak said afterward.

“We absolutely have," Schaub said. "As a team, we need to get better and get better fast, myself included, most importantly. I’m better than I’m playing and our team is better than we’re playing."

Schaub finished the night with a trio of interceptions, zero touchdowns and 173 yards passing. He was 19-for-35 through the air, was sacked once and finished with a quarterback rating of 32.2. When the fourth quarter began, he was replaced by backup T.J. Yates, but Kubiak said Schaub is still his starting quarterback.

Despite the struggles, running back Arian Foster stuck up for Schaub.

"I feel confident in my quarterback 100 percent," Foster said. "I am going to ride with him as long as we ride with him. That is just how I am. I love all of my teammates. We are brothers out here, sweating and bleeding together so I am riding with him.”

Wide receiver Andre Johnson said he was frustrated after the loss, but has faith in Schaub. He also emphasized that there are still 11 games to play.

"This is not the end of our season," Johnson said. "We’re not going to hit the panic button, but we do know we need to get things fixed and we need to get things fixed fast.”

Schaub and the Texans will get their next chance at a fix on Sunday afternoon at Reliant Stadium. For the third straight week they'll face an NFC West opponent, as the Rams come to town for a noon kickoff.
