Matt Schaub working hard to return for Sunday's game

Posted Oct 17, 2013

Matt Schaub reveals he has been working with trainers at all hours to help him rehab his injury and play in Sunday's game at KC.

Matt Schaub is losing sleep over his injury. Literally.

On Wednesday the starting quarterback revealed that he had been working with the Texans head athletic trainer Geoff Kaplan in the early hours of the morning.

“I had Geoff (Kaplan) here at 4:30 this morning,” Schaub said.

Every day since Sunday’s 38-13 loss, Schaub has been working with trainers at 4:30 a.m. to get himself ready in time for Kansas City. He is aiming to make it onto the practice field sometime this week.

“That’s my hope,” Schaub said. “I definitely am shooting for that. If I want to go out there and play on Sunday, I need to get out there at some point to move around and do some things. I’m just doing as much as I can from sun up to sun down to get myself as healthy as possible.”

Schaub, injured on a sack in the third quarter against St. Louis, addressed the media Wednesday without crutches or a walking boot.

“There’s nothing broken,” Schaub said. “If there was something broken, I probably wouldn’t be able to walk in here right now. There’s a few things going on, but just a lot of soreness and swelling.”

Schaub also suffered some ligament damage as a result of rolling his ankle. He was grateful that his prognosis was not as severe as the Lisfranc injury that caused him to miss the remainder of the 2011 season.

“For what was going on, I definitely thought it was going to be worse,” Schaub said. “Having been the same foot that I injured a couple of years ago, so we definitely escaped the less of severities that it could have been. It could have been a lot worse.”

Head coach Gary Kubiak will determine whether or not Schaub can play at Kansas City at the end of the week. In the meantime, backups T.J. Yates and Case Keenum have been splitting reps in practice and could start on Sunday.
